I am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large cityIf it weren’t for my job I would immediately move out for the open spaces and go back to nature

Cities can be frightening placesThe majority of the population live in many tower blocksnoisydirty and impersonalThe sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors upAll you can see from your window is skyor other blocks of flatsChildren become aggressive and nervous as they are shut up at home all daywith nowhere to playtheir mothers feel isolated(孤立的) from the rest of the worldStrangely enoughin the past the residents of one street all knew each otherbut nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don’t even say hello to each other

Country lifeon the other handdiffers from this kind ofisolated existence in that a sense of

community generally binds the residents of small villages togetherPeople have the advantage of

knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need helpBut country life has disadvantages tooWhile it is true that you may be among friends in a villageit is also true that you are cut off from the exciting and important events that take place in citiesThere's little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movieShopping becomes a major problem, and for anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go a long way to the nearest large townThe city people who leave for the country often can’t bear the stillness and quiet there.

Whatthenis the answer? The country has the advantage of peace and quiet, but suffers from the disadvantage of being cut offthe city gives people a feeling of isolationand constant noise can nearly drive you madBut one of its main advantages is that you are at the center of thingsand that life doesn’t come to all end at half-past nine at night. Some people have found a compromise(折衷) between the twoleave cities and move to villages within commuting(可乘公交车往返的) distance of large citiesIt sounds great!

68It seems that the writer prefers to live in the country mainly because ______.

Athe city is some how polluted                Bthe country folks are more friendly

Cone can get better sleep in the country      Dit’s hard for people to find jobs in the city

69The biggest disadvantage of living in the country is that ______.

A1ife there is inconvenient                       Bshopping is almost impossible

Cyou can not see a movie or a show           D1ife comes to an end at half past nine

70As to which is better, city life or country lifethe writer ______.

Adid some explanation                            Bmade some comparison

Cdescribed both of them vividly                 Dtalked a lot about his preference

71The underlined word bindsin the third paragraph his similar in meaning to ______.

  Aattracts            Bdrives                  Cprevents          Dunites

E

People have been painting pictures for at least 30,000 yearsThe earliest pictures were painted by people who hunted animalsThey used to paint pictures of the animals they wanted to catch and killPictures of this kind have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain, No one knows why they were painted therePerhaps the painter thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animalsOr perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories in pictures

About 5,000 years ago the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use pictures as a kind of writingThey drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their languageThe signs these people used became a kind of alphabet

The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture-writing and  pictures togetherWhen an important person diedscenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buriedSome of these pictures are like modem comic-strip{连环漫画) storiesIt has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip. Butfor the Egyptianspictures still had magic powerSo they did not try to make their way of writing simpleThe ordinary people could not understand it.

By the year 1,000 BCpeople who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writingThe signs theyused were very easy to writeand there were fewer of them than in the Egyptian systemThis was because each signor letterrepresented only one sound in their languageThe Greeks developed this system and formed the letter of the Greek alphabetThe Romans copied the ideaand Roman alphabet is now used all over the world

These days, we can write down a storyor record informationwithout using picturesBut we still need pictures of all, kindsdrawingsphotographssigns and diagramsWe find them everywherein books and newspapers, in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and workPictures help us to understand and remember things more easilyand they call make a story much more interesting

72Ancient people in France and Spain painted pictures on walls of caves because ______.

Athey loved animals                              Bthey enjoyed seeing pictures

Cthey thought pictures helpful                  Dthey preferred painting pictures telling stories

73From this passage we know that ______.

AEgypt is well-known for their comic-strip stories

BThe Roman alphabet was developed from Egyptian alphabet

CThe Egyptian signs made a particular alphabet come into being

DPeople in other parts of the world copied their written system from the Egyptians

  “八校”2006—2007学年度高三第一次联考

英语录音稿及参考答案

1. M: I went shopping with Mr. Brown and he bought some paper, paints and brushes.

W: Oh, I know, he needs them at high school.

2. W: I don’t understand how you got a ticket. I always thought you were a careful driver.

M: I usually am, but I thought I could make it before the light turned.

3. W: This is the third time you’ve been late this week, Robert. You’ll have to do better than that,

or I might find it necessary to let you go.

M: It won’t happen again. I promise.

4. M: I want to get a private room as soon as possible. Also, please put a “No Visitors” sign on my door when you leave.

W: I’ll take care of both things, but first put this in your mouth so that I can fill in your chart.

5. W: Now this chair I like. It would go perfectly with my blue carpet.

M: Well, there’s a small hole on the back side of the cushion. See? It regularly sells for $159,

but we will gladly make an adjustment if you want it.

6. M: Hello. Are you the person who has a house for sale?

W: Yes, I am.

M: Well, the ad says that it has four bedrooms and three baths, just what I need for my family

of six. May I ask how much you want for it?

W: I prefer not to talk about it over the phone, but let’s say it’s $50,000. But you should pay me $ 10,000 first. Why don’t you come by and take a look?

M: Well, I’m not sure I could pay you such a large sum of money right now, but I would like to see the house. If you can tell me how to get to Churchill Avenue from South Florida Street, my wife and I’ll be over.

7. W: What’s the matter, dear?

M: I want a cup of coffee, but this machine is out of order, and I lost my money.

W: Let’s go to the restaurant at the Student Center.

M: Better not. The last time I was there it was so crowded that I had to wait in line for almost an hour.

W: Really? Let’s go somewhere else then. It can’t be too long because I have a test at three o’clock.

M: Okay. Let’s go to the library. There’s another machine downstairs by the telephones.

8. W: When did you become interested in collecting stamps?

M: Oh, when I was about ten years old. It’s an exciting hobby. You know, the first postage stamps

were issued in Britain in 1840.

W: Really, I didn’t know that. I did know that the charge for mail delivery was paid by either the sender or the receiver. How much was the usual charge?

M: Oh, about ten cents for a short distance. But post offices were losing money with that system.

Rowland Hill, an Englishman, suggested using postage stamps. Here’s a picture of the first

   two stamps issued.

W: They both bear a picture of Queen Victoria.

M: Yes, I wish I had the originals. I would be a wealthy man instead of a poor stamp collector.

9. M: Hey, Michelle. Look what I just found. Right here in the sand.

W: A piece of wood? Oh. Driftwood. Interesting shape, almost like some sort of modern

 sculpture.

M: Yeah. And feel how smooth it is.

W: Hmm. Must’ve been in the water a long time. It could’ve been drifting in the ocean movement

for months, or even years.

M: In the ocean movement? Doesn’t the wind just blow things around out there?

W: Well, sure. But the ocean water is always moving, too. Almost like rivers, but underwater rivers,

 flowing through the ocean.

M: So how do scientists find out where ocean water goes? Stick a message in a bottle and throw it in the water?

W: Don’t laugh. In fact, I was reading in a science magazine that scientists have put huge numbers of bottles into the ocean over the years. They wanted to map out where the ocean water would carry them.

M: Say, I’m sure – after they found out where all those bottles ended up – they could enter all that

data into a computer and make a pretty detailed model to … to show where the ocean water goes.

W: In fact, they did.

Nowadays, rugby is more than just a different way of playing football. But over a hundred years ago, it was “invented” by a schoolboy playing in a football team. This boy wanted to score a goal, so he picked up the ball and ran up the pitch. Then he put the ball down between the goalposts. The boy was a pupil at Rugby school, so ever since then the game has been called rugby.

Let me explain some of the rules of the game. There are fifteen men in a rugby team. In football you may only kick the ball; the ball is completely round. A rugby ball is not round. This makes the ball easier to hold, because you must run with the ball in your hands. Each side tries to carry the ball to the other team’s end of the pitch and places it on the ground. If a player can do this without the other side stopping him, he scores a “try”, which is worth four points. The player can then attempt to kick the ball between the goalposts and score two more points. If a team breaks the rules then the other side can take a free kick at their goal, and it counts as three points.

Every year England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and France play each other at rugby in a championship. However, the best team in the world comes from New Zealand. The team is called the “All Blacks” because the players wear black shirts, shorts and socks.

Rugby is popular all over the world. Although rugby is a rougher game than football, the players are friendly, but that is after the game is over!

第二节  书面表达 sample versions:

We often give money to the people in poor or disaster-stricken areas. Some students don’t think it a good way to help people there. However, some prefer helping the unfortunate with money.

In their opinion, money can be used to buy daily necessities and can help people rebuild their hometowns, while sometimes the things people there receive are not what they need actually.

But some other students think that giving used clothing to the people in those areas is better. Many people, especially in rich areas and in cities, have much clothing they no longer like or need. By giving it away to the needy people we can make the best use of it. Besides, we are just students, and we have no incomes of our own.

Anyhow, no matter which way is considered better, we should try our best to help those who need help.
